Bernstein’s Broadway in St Augustine
First Coast Opera kicked off its 2018-19 season with Bernstein’s Broadway, a concert highlighting the musical legacy of iconic American composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein. Part of the international Leonard Bernstein at 100 celebration, Bernstein’s Broadway featured hit tunes from his wildly successful Broadway musicals performed by guest artists in the Lightner Museum “swimming pool”, 25 Granada St., in downtown St. Augustine.
The program featured selections from West Side Story, Candide, On the Town, Trouble in Tahiti, and Wonderful Town. Returning guest artists included Fort Lauderdale soprano Elena Galván, who sang the role of Kay in last season’s The Stranger’s Tale, Tampa mezzo soprano Sarah Nordin, who sang on last season’s Opera’s Most Haunting Melodies concert, University of Florida professor Matt Morgan, who last sang with FCO in the 2015 Opera Paris concert, popular local singer Carrie Thornton with accomplished local music director Curtis Powell accompanying on piano. They were joined by St. Petersburg baritone Luis González and Tampa bass Tyler Putnam each making FCO debuts. Leonard Bernstein’s music resonates with both classical and musical theater audiences.
According to FCO Artistic Director Curtis Tucker, “Bernstein’s song-writing is extraordinary. From a performer’s standpoint, they can be quite complicated, but for the audience, his songs are tuneful, clever, and memorable.”
The program was performed, at the Lightner Museum swimming pool area, 25 Granada St., in downtown Saint Augustine on Thursday, October 11 at 7:30pm and will be performed again on October 13th at Del Webb Auditorium in Ponte Vedra.
