Steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction or science fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery. So now there is a store that had its grand opening on Saturday in downtown St Augustine. Aunt Matilda’s is your place if Steampunk fashion and gadgets are your thing. First Coast.TV was there and so was R2D2, and we got to speak to Aunt Matilda.
We all know the fashion capitals of the world are New York …Paris …London … Milan …so, why not add St. Augustine to the group 🙂
The Inaugural St Augustine Fashion Show was held at the North Florida Regional Airport Conference Center, from March 4 – 6.
“Runway on the Runway”

Alphonso explained that each designer went through a rigorous selection process and in the end “We have designers who produce everything from Women’s and Men’s couture, resort, casual and formal attire, children’s apparel, jewelry, and accessories. Many have gained international recognition and are worn all over the world.” She received such a tremendous response from outstanding designers that she finally had to close the week out and now, she says, “I’ve got a Fall show in the works scheduled for sometime in September.”
The show was a stunning success, and so the chances are that we will have a second show in the near future.
Visitors to Flagler College’s Ponce Hall were offered a more detailed glimpse into 19th century life with the college’s “Gilded Age Fashion Show,” an event showcasing the period garb with patterns from 1888, the year the Hotel Ponce de Leon opened.
The garments in the exhibit have been designed and created by Flagler College students. The visitors saw from ladies undergarments, dresses, evening gowns, men dinner jackets, and tail coats. Absolutely lovely.
